Statement Plants That Will Actually Wow

Posted by

When selecting statement plants for a living room, there are a number of things to consider. The top considerations tend to be price, aesthetics and durability of the plant. Below are plants that should be considered:

Best Statement Living Room Plants

Monstera Deliciosa

When looking for a statement plant, “Monsteras” often appear at the top of the list. However, what people usually refer to as a “Monstera” falls into two different types of plants: Deliciosa or Borsigiana. When buying a small plant, you often cannot tell the difference between the two. However, A Deliciosa, while slower growing, grows to be larger and more wild. This is important in a statement plant. This plant is also very durable, requiring only a moderate amount of light and weekly waterings.

Additionally, these plants are very easy to propagate, and so making the plant appear full is very easy to do. (While a great statement plant, I list out my favorite Monsteras here).

Snake Plant

Snake Plants are one of the most durable plants around. For a living room, this is really important as the plant is unlikely to be existing in ideal plant conditions. Snake Plants can thrive in low light and are drought resistant, so periods of neglect will not harm it.

The negative to the plant is that it it very slow growing.

Fiddle Leaf Fig

Fiddle leaf fig, also known as Ficus lyrata, is a popular choice for indoor houseplants due to its unique appearance. One of the reasons that fiddle leafs are iconic is their large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves can grow to 18 inches! These leaves can add a dramatic touch to any living space, making them a popular choice for interior designers. However, it’s important to note that fiddle leaf figs can be more challenging to care for compared to other houseplants, as they require a very particular amount of light and humidity to thrive. This will require some experimentation with windows and placement.

The vertical nature of the plant is beneficial for filling its purpose as a statement plant, but it is also great for smaller NYC apartments. Luckily, while these plants used to be very expensive, they are now $20 at Home Depot. Be sure to spray roots with Hydrogen Peroxide and leaves with neem oil as large retailers tend to have pests.

Raven ZZ Plant

One of the main reasons that ZZ plants are so great is that they are extremely easy to care for, making them a great choice for beginners or those with busy schedules. They can tolerate a range of light levels, from low to bright indirect light, and can go for long periods of time without water. Additionally, ZZ plants have attractive glossy leaves, which can add a touch of greenery and texture to any living space. Finally, ZZ plants are also great for improving air quality, as they are effective at removing pollutants from the air. Overall, ZZ plants are a versatile, low-maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing addition to any indoor garden.

The ZZ Plant has become highly popular due to the Sill, but I would recommend splurging a bit on a Raven version, which you won’t be able to find in most garden centers. They can be found on some online selling platforms, including Etsy, and are really eye catching for modern spaces. As with the snake plant, this plant doesn’t grow to be much taller than 2 or 3 feet generally, and so it is worth investing in an elevated pot.
